I’m going to be toying with the look of this site, so don’t be surprised when you come to this page and its completely screwed over.
Slow Going
It’s been a while since we’ve put anything up. I promise there’s more coming. It’s been a very busy two weeks for me. I don’t know what Cory’s been doing. He needs to get with it too.
Anyway, there’ll be more soon.
Vertical Steam Boiler
My first real attempt at a boiler design. I didn’t focus on the furnace so, if anyone is judging, please don’t judge me on the furnace.

I plan to make some more improvements, but I’m pretty happy with this try.
SKETCHES
As promised, here are a few ideas I’ve come up with.

The idea behind the sketches, for me, is to draw them as if they were actually for humans to drive. Obviously on the small boat model I will need a larger hull in relation to the engine, and I won’t have a chair in it. And the tank will probably have a different style of tread, but the concepts are all part of the fun.

MY INTEREST
I STRIVE TO BE A CERTAIN STYLE. NOT JUST IN FASHON, BUT A STYLE OF SELF. MY WHOLE REALM OF INTERESTS REFLECTS ON WHO I AM AND WHAT I CONSIDER ENJOYABLE. A SENSE OF TRADITION IS A BIG PART OF THAT STYLE. MY INTEREST IN STEAMWORKS DOES NOT DICTATE MY STYLE. MY STYLE BROUGHT FORTH MY INTEREST IN STEAM CULTURE. IM JUST TRYING TO GIVE YOU ALL A LITTLE BIT OF INSIGHT INTO MY MIND SO THAT YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND WHERE I AM COMING FROM. TRADITIONAL THINGS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN OF INTEREST TO ME LIKE OLD BOOKS, PIPES, BASEBALL, ETC. FASHON AND STREET CULTURE HAS ALWAYS BEEN IMPORTANT TO ME AS WELL. AND RECENTLY THOSE TWO AREAS OF INTEREST HAVE COLIDED AND I AM LOVING IT. I ASKED MY BROTHER TO POST ABOUT THE NEW AREA OF TRADITIONAL STYLE IN STREET WEAR SO IM NOT GOING TO STEAL ANY OF HIS THUNDER BUT I AM JUST GOING TO POST A COUPLE OF PICTURES TO SHOW YOU WHAT I MEAN.

Steam Engine Boiler Types
I did some digging around trying to learn the best way to make a steam boiler tank.
Science.HowStuffWorks.com has a great article about steam boilers. I didn’t know there were two major types of boillers.
The Fire-tube Boiler and the Water-tube Boiler.
Quoted from How Stuff Works:
“The high-pressure steam for a steam engine comes from a boiler. The boiler’s job is to apply heat to water to create steam. There are two approaches: fire tube and water tube.A fire-tube boiler was more common in the 1800s. It consists of a tank of water perforated with pipes. The hot gases from a coal or wood fire run through the pipes to heat the water in the tank, as shown here:

More common today are water-tube boilers, in which water runs through a rack of tubes that are positioned in the hot gases from the fire. The following simplified diagram shows you a typical layout for a water-tube boiler:”

The fire-tube Boiler looks quite a bit easier to build. But the water-tube boiler is many times safer for obvious reasons.
But where would we be without our sense of adventure?
Fire-tube boiler, here we come.

BOILER
SO, WHEN I GET HOME FROM WORK TODAY I AM GOING TO POST SOME CONCEPTS THAT I CAME UP WITH AND MAYBE A COUPLE LINKS TO SOME OTHER COOL STEAMHEADS. THIS IS GOING TO BE A LONG PROCESS TO ACTUALLY GET MOVING ON SOME PROJECTS. WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO SPEND ALOT OF TIME LEARNING ABOUT PRESSURE, TORQUE, AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE. NOT TO MENTION, IF WE BUY STEAMPARTS ITS GOING TO BE WACKY EXPENSIVE. SO IM THINKING WE MAY HAVE TO BUILD OUR OWN BOILER. THE ENGINE WE WILL HAVE TO BUY, NO QUESTION, BCAUSE WE DONT HAVE MACHINING TOOLS. BUT CHECK OUT THIS GUY WHO BUILT HIS OWN BOILER.
SWEET!

STEAM
WE ARE ABOUT TO EMBARK ON A NEW VENTURE. MY FRIENDS AND I WANT TO START USING STEAM ENGINES TO CREATE SOME OF THE MOST FUN AND USEFUL GADGETS OUT THERE. THIS BLOG WILL FOLLOW OUR JOURNEY AS WE LEARN, START NEW PROJECTS, AND CREATE STEAM ENGINES TO POWER OUR NEWFOUND INTEREST. IF YOU SHARE OUR INTEREST PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT US AND BE A PART OF OUR ENDEAVORS. ENJOY.
